This is a pair of lion gate statue. The design inspiration for the Lion Gate statue comes from the lion of HSBC Bank in Shanghai. Two lions, one on the left and one on the right, with different postures. The lion on the left opened its mouth, as if emitting a deafening roar.

The lion on the right keeps its mouth closed, appearing more calm and introverted. This comparison not only showcases the different personalities of lions, but also implies a balance between strength and wisdom.

historical background

The history of the Lion Gate statues can be traced back to 1923, when Shanghai HSBC commissioned British sculptor George Ashley Seville to create these lion statues to celebrate the completion of the new building. These two statues are made of high-quality bronze casting, each about 2.5 meters high and weighing several tons.

They are placed on both sides of the entrance of the bank building, becoming a beautiful scenery on the Bund in Shanghai.
