Socrates Sculpture
Socrates Sculpture is a full-length standing figure, with the figure standing barefoot on a square base. His posture is natural and steady, with a slight forward lean that creates a sense of dynamism, suggesting contemplation and dialogue.
The overall form does not strive for idealized heroic proportions, but instead presents a realistic and unpretentious image of a middle-aged or elderly man, emphasizing his identity as a thinker rather than a symbol of power. The flowing ancient Greek robe drapes naturally, with clear and weighty folds, complementing the quiet and restrained posture, giving the entire work an artistic temperament that is introverted, rational, and full of spiritual tension.
Character Background: Socrates and His Philosophy
Socrates (469-399 BC) was one of the most important philosophers of ancient Greece, revered by later generations as the “father of Western philosophy.” He himself left no written works; his ideas are primarily known through the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon, as well as the playwright Aristophanes. Socrates dedicated his life to public discussion and ethical inquiry, emphasizing “know thyself,” and advocating for approaching truth through continuous questioning and dialogue.
In the history of Western art, Socrates is not known for his handsome appearance. On the contrary, ancient texts repeatedly describe him as ugly: with a flat nose, thick lips, bulging eyes, and a rough physique. However, it is precisely this contrast of “ugly in form but beautiful in character” that made him an ideal figure for artists to portray the ideal of “spirit over matter.”
